BROOMBALL RULES

Broomball Rules &Information

Contact:  sports@bcec.net for further questions

Dates & Times:

  • Sundays, June 10th – July 15th
  • Located in the Quincy Elementary School gym
  • 6 weeks of play starting promptly at 12:45pm and teams must vacate before 1:55pm

Team Requirements:

  • 5 on 5, with one goalie for each side.  Teams may pull their goalies only in the last 3 minutes of play
  • Minimum of 2 girls on the field of play, and 4 females on the total roster
  • Teams are not required to wear the same shirt color, but are highly encouraged to in order to avoid confusion with the other team.
  • Last day to add a player onto your roster is June 17th
  • Minimum 9 players on roster, maximum is 13.

Players:

  • Any player under the age of 18 must have a permission slip filled out before the start of their first game on June 10th.
  • Grades 10 and up are eligible to play.

Equipment:

  • Players can wear protective gear such as shin pads, kneepads, arm braces, etc.  No helmets allowed unless you are the goalie.
  • Brooms and balls are provided, not required to buy

Game play:

  • Each game will be approx. 20 minutes (running time) long.  Goals count as one point.
  • Goals are scored when the ball hits any part of the mats placed up against the wall.
  • Players may not enter the “goalie zone” (from the mats against the wall up to the end line of the basketball court)
  • Goalies may roam only on their half of the court and can use any part of their body to block the ball.  Goalies may be pulled for an extra offense/defense player only during the last 3 minutes of the game.
  • Balls that get hit out towards the stands, out the doors, in the corners will be counted as out of bounds, and it will result in a roll in (ball must be rolled) using your hand.  (similar to soccer)
  • If there is a tie at the end of 20 minutes, there will be shoot out.  Shoot out involves choosing one person from each team to shoot and either the same or different person to be the goalie.   Away team goes first and home team goes second.  During shoot out, players can shoot higher than their waist.  After 3 unsuccessful attempts by both teams the game will be called a tie.

Warnings & Penalties:

  • Players may accidentally bump into each other or hit each other; however, there is absolutely no intentional checking, no slashing, tripping any player.  There will be severe penalties/suspensions for misconduct.

  • Players cannot swing their brooms higher than their waist when hitting the ball!!  Referees will give the player one warning, the second warning will result in an automatic benching for the rest of the game.

  • Please remember this is for fun.

Referees:  Unlike previous years of sports, we will require each team to provide a referee for a game other than their own.  The referee’s job is very simple in this sport.  Will Chu will help you out if you have any questions.

Responsibilities include:

1.)    Keeping track of time with stop watch

2.)    Giving out warnings for hi-sticking

3.)    Declare any goals (ie watch for the ball to hit the mats)

4.)    Place ball in center of court for face off at beginning of game and after goals.
